1200                 Measuring student learning and confidence in learning with an active learning environment

So how can we identify and measure what happens in the classroom?  This presentation will demonstrate how active learning pedagogies can generate learning in the classroom and develop student confidence and self-assessment skills at the same time.  We will consider two examples making use of peer-instruction and team-based-learning to enhance teaching and learning quality.  For each of these, we will consider basic elements of pedagogical design and a simple methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of our teaching methods. The evidence-base emerging from our approach allows us to quantify a measure of learning gain and confidence gain.
